A Turning Point in Building Confidence in Advanced Medicine As Thailand’s Stem Cell Industry Enters an Era of Regulatory Standards and Legal Recognition
A major milestone in advancing confidence in the future of healthcare has arrived as Thailand’s stem cell industry enters a new era where internationally recognized standards and regulatory frameworks are becoming a fundamental requirement. The Department of Medical Sciences (DMSC), under the Ministry of Public Health, has introduced Cell Bank Certification Standards aimed at enhancing the safety, quality, and credibility of medical cell storage services, supporting the growth of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs), and strengthening Thailand’s position as a regional Medical and Wellness Hub.
Dr Ekachai Piensriwatchara, deputy permanent secretary for public health, stated that the establishment of Cell Bank Standards represents a significant step in preparing Thailand for the era of Precision Medicine and Regenerative Medicine. These medical approaches not only focus on disease treatment but also emphasize prevention, restoration, and quality-of-life enhancement through advanced technologies, which are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future healthcare system and medical industry.
To support this transformation, the Department of Medical Sciences has issued regulations governing the criteria and conditions for Cell Bank Certification. The framework is designed to ensure that cell storage and utilization comply with international standards while enhancing confidence in quality and safety among the public, researchers, and industry stakeholders.
“The development of Cell Bank Standards is not merely about certifying business operators; it is about laying the foundation for Thailand’s future. It will enable the country to become a regional leader in biotechnology, precision medicine, and regenerative medicine,” Dr. Ekachai said.
He further emphasized that cell banks are far more than storage facilities. They represent critical infrastructure for the health economy, strengthening Thailand’s competitiveness and supporting the nation’s ambition to become a regional hub for advanced medical technologies and the biotechnology industry. As the world increasingly transitions toward a bioeconomy, countries capable of managing biological resources under robust standards will gain a significant competitive advantage and be able to transform healthcare into meaningful economic opportunities under the concept of “Health for Wealth.”
Dr. Ekachai also commended MEDEZE Group Public Company Limited and all stakeholders involved in advancing Thailand’s Cell Bank Standards, describing the initiative as an important starting point for building trust, developing the industry, and laying the groundwork for the sustainable growth of Thailand’s bioeconomy and health economy.
Dr. Pornthep Siriwanarangsun, President of the Preventive Medicine Association of Thailand, added that the implementation of Cell Bank Certification Standards marks a significant milestone in strengthening Thailand’s system for the storage and utilization of human cells. The initiative will support the development of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) while contributing to the expansion of the country’s health economy.
The standards are also aligned with Thailand’s national strategy to drive economic growth through technology and innovation, enhancing the country’s health-economy potential and supporting its vision of becoming a regional Medical and Wellness Hub.
Meanwhile, Dr. Veerapol Khemarangsan, Chief Executive Officer of MEDEZE Group Public Company Limited (MEDEZE), the first company in Thailand to receive Cell Bank Certification, stated that the achievement reaffirms the Company’s commitment to developing stem cell technologies in accordance with the highest international standards.
“The certification serves as an important foundation for advancing next-generation medical technologies and supporting future demand for advanced healthcare solutions,” he said.
Cell banking technologies and applications in Thailand have expanded rapidly in recent years, particularly in medical treatment, public health, research, and healthcare innovation. As the use of stored cells continues to grow, maintaining internationally recognized standards is essential to ensuring the quality, safety, and effectiveness of cells used for medical and public health purposes. The certification framework also promotes fair competition and encourages domestic operators to adopt best practices in cell banking operations.
Dr. Veerapol added, “I would like to thank everyone who has supported MEDEZE on this journey. Achieving Thailand’s first Cell Bank Certification is an important milestone not only for our organization but also for the development of an industry that will contribute to the country’s long-term sustainability through innovation. Cell Bank Standards should not be viewed merely as technical requirements; they are essential mechanisms for preserving the quality, safety, and reliability of stored cells over decades.”
“At MEDEZE, we believe that every stored cell represents an opportunity for the future. That opportunity deserves to be protected under the highest standards at every stage of processing and storage. Preserving cells today is not simply about storing biological samples—it is about preserving confidence, hope, and future healthcare options for the people we love.”
